Surf Beach Front Yard

Building on A Nature Reserve

The Surf Beach Esplanade project was an opportunity for CWC Constructions to design and build a contemporary family home that nestles into the rugged Phillip Island southern coastline.

The site is opposite the nesting grounds of the quarter of million Shearwater birds that land on our shores every summer and turn the dusk skies into an evening spectacular. This meant that views over the nesting grounds were to be maximised, yet due to the prevailing south-westerly winds, family living to the north was more desirable.

Another requirement was that the home take full advantage of the views and light, yet the home’s major source of heating is a wood heater, therefore much research was done into selecting window systems and building products that retained the heat during the colder months and building expertise was used to ensure the close-off of any potential draughts. Ceiling fans and cross flowing windows were used in most rooms to provide a cheap source of ventilation for the warmer days. Timber floors were installed throughout the living spaces to reflect the natural setting of the dwelling while providing an easy cleaning surface for the sand and dirt that is invariably brought in.
